In a technological development that few will celebrate, traffic wardens have a new weapon at their disposal in the form of a robot that can hoist cars clean off the street.

In Liverpool this week residents were bemused to see a machine that looks like a cross between a forklift and a small tank pick up and move a Volvo XC60 that was parked in a disabled parking space.

The robot, which arrived on the back of a tow truck and was being controlled remotely by a nearby warden, is a French-built invention recently arrived on these shores.

Called the Eastract, it is capable of lifting 2.5 tonnes, allowing it to carry most 4x4s, and works by slipping its forks beneath a car before lifting
